Maryville University is a private, coeducational university in St. Louis, which is an independent city in Missouri state, USA, with a population estimated at a number of more than 350 000 inhabitants, also being the principal municipality of Greater St. Louis, which has more than 2 800 000 people, living within its limits, fact which makes it the largest urban area in the state and 16th-largest in USA.
Maryville University of St. Louis was established in 1872, by the Religious of the Sacred Heart, and it is one of the oldest private institutions in Greater St. Louis. It was originally an academy for young women, but later became co-educational, in 1923, becoming a four-year college, and in 1991, receiving university status.
Currently, Maryville has an enrollment of more than 2000 students, and offers a variety of educational programs, in numerous fields of study, being one of three universities in Missouri to offer a degree in music therapy, the other 2 universities whith such program being University of Missouri–Kansas City and Drury University.
Maryville's athletic teams are known as the Maryville Saints, who compete in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, in NCAA Division III. However, the university has been accepted into the Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC), for the 2009-2010 school year, when the school will move to NCAA Division II athletics.
The distinctive colors of the Saints are red, white and black, and their mascot is ''Louie'' the Saint Bernard.
